Please share a memory of Daniel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Daniel Joseph Wilmer of Amity Harbor died on Friday, August 31, after a multi-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Danny was born in Brooklyn on January 26, 1937, the first child of Frederick and Ruth (Crager) Wilmer. He grew up in Ozone Park before moving to Oceanside, New York. There he attended Oceanside High School, where he excelled at academics and lettered in basketball and baseball. Following high school graduation, Danny served honorably in the Army at various military bases throughout the country. Once his service commitment ended, he came back to family and friends on Long Island where he met his wife of 49 years, Virginia (Morgen) Wilmer. Danny and Ginny married in 1969 and moved into their long-time family home in Amity Harbor shortly thereafter. Danny completed his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from New York Institute of Technology. Professionally, he was a loyal member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W, Local 3) and was a purchasing agent on many of the area’s biggest infrastructure and construction projects, including the original World Trade Center. At home, Danny was active in his church and community.  He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and served as an usher at St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church, a coach in the Amityville Soccer League, and an officer of the Amity Harbor Civic Association. Before his health declined, Danny tutored students in the Copiague Library Literacy Program and regularly read to the children at Great Neck Road Elementary School in Copiague. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Edward Wilmer. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia, and their three children: Daniel Wilmer (Jennifer Way) of Jersey City, New Jersey; James Wilmer (Christie Farriella) of Patchogue, New York; and Ellen Soll (Gregory) of New Orleans, Louisiana; as well as his grandchildren Ada, Eliza, and June. His siblings, Frederick and Joyce Wilmer, also survive him. A wake will be held on Thursday, September 6, at  2–4:30 p.m. and 7–9:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, 67 Broadway (Rte.110), Amityville, New York. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 7, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church in Amityville, New York. Donations can be made in Daniel’s memory to St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach, Amityville, NY; Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk County; or to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
