Obituary of Evelyn F. Harewood
Evelyn Ford was born on December 5, 1924 in New York City, the eldest daughter of five children, to George Ford and Georgia Walters Ford. She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald, Sr.; brothers, George, twins William and Henry; and sister, Viola; her son, Reginald, Jr. and her great grandson, Sean.
Her formal education occurred in the New York City public school system and she graduated from Brooklyn’s Girls’ High School in 1942. She began working after high school in a factory. Once she past her test, she started her career with the Federal Government as a clerk typist and remained with the government transferring to Long Island in the early 1950’s working at Mitchell Field Air Force Base in Uniondale; then in Mineola with the Internal Revenue Service and finally Smithtown. She retired as a Tax Examiner from the IRS in 1986.
Upon retirement, Evelyn volunteered with the Board of Elections and for approximately ten years as a fourth grade Foster Grandparent at the Park Avenue Elementary School in Amityville.
Evelyn and her siblings were brought up by their foster mother, Anna Mitchell who was a member of Victory Tabernacle Seventh Day Christian Church. She was exposed at an early age to spiritual values and was baptized in the faith. In the early years, she joined the Junior Choir. While not an auxiliary of the church, Evelyn socialized with other young women at church as part of Les Dardanelles. These individuals maintained their friendship for over sixty years.
It was also at Victory that she met and fell in love with Reginald Albert Harewood and they married on June 29, 1947. From this union, two sons were born; Reginald Albert, Jr. and Raymond Winston. Wanting a home of their own, the family moved to Amityville, Long Island in 1950.
Deaconess Harewood held positions of Secretary with the Home Missionary Department and Board of Deacons. She was also Treasurer of the Usher Board and served as a Board Member of the Seventh Day Christian Conference.
Deaconess Harewood was a quiet spirit with a ready smile. She loved her family and church and was faithful in her many endeavors.
She leaves to mourn their loss: brother, Henry: son, Raymond Winston; grandson, Reginald Jovan; great- granddaughter, Layla Imani; godson, Stephan Douglas-Allen; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; many cousins and a host of relatives and friends.
